Black smoke from my Thwaites 3 ton dumper

My Thwaites 3 ton dumper with a Petter PH2 engine is emitting thick black smoke and wont shut off easily. I suspect diesel leaking into the sump causing back pressure. Injectors look okay but I need to check the spray pattern. It only starts by bumping, not with the handle. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

What you're describing sounds like it could be a case of diesel runaway especially if it's burning oil from the sump. What's the oil level look like? Thick black smoke and hard shut-off are big clues

Just checked the spray patter and it seems okay, no problem with the oil level either

If it's running on sump oil and won't shut off, that engine's basically trying to self-destruct, at that point, it's not just repair, t might be time to consider a replacement
